Busy day at Anfield

It’s been a busy day at Liverpool with the transfer window closing tomorrow it looks like Rafa Benitez has finally landed the defensive cover he made his priority during January.

  • Alvaro Arbeloa, a Spaniard capable of playing right or centre back, looks set to sign for £2.64m from Deportivo La Coruna. Mostly used as a full back Arbeloa will provide much needed cover for Steve Finnan on the right of the Reds defence and add depth to the squad as we approach the end of season run-in.

Arbeloa only joined la Coruna in the summer from Real Madrid and the 24 year old has been impressive for them, with fans said to be upset to see him leave after being their best defender this season.

  • Another arrival looks set to be flying in from Spain as well, Francis Duran, a defensive midfielder from Malaga. The 18 year old will sign his first professional contract for the Reds and again shows Benitez’s commitment to build for the future.
  • There’s been no update on the Javier Mascherano deal today, but the Daily Mail claimed it was all set for the Argentinian to complete an 18 month loan deal before the window closes. Confirmation of this either way is yet to be heard.
  • Meanwhile, Benitez has opted for 3-4-3 again for the trip to West Ham this evening, with Kuyt, Bellamy and Crouch all lining up in attack as they did in the 3-0 win over Watford just over two weeks ago. It’s the first match for Liverpool since they saw off Chelsea 2-0 at home.
