Monday’s News: Pennant for Bentley?

As the anger and frustration vented towards referee Steve Bennett continues into the week, we take a look at what’s hitting the headlines this Easter Monday.

Rumours surrounding a summer move for Blackburn Rovers’ winger David Bentley are hotting up.

JPThe People is suggesting that Benitez is ready to offer £12million for the England U-21 star, and fight against Athletico Madrid to win his signature.

Other reports suggest Jermaine Pennant may be offered to Blackburn plus cash in a swap deal as Benitez looks to improve the right side of his team.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has revealed he still doesn’t know why he was sent off during the Reds’ gutting 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Argentine international was sent off for two yellow cards by Bennett, the second supposedly for dissent, but the player claims he was merely asking why teammate Fernando Torres had been booked.

Mascherano said today, “I do not know why I was sent off. I asked the referee what was happening. I did not swear, I was not aggressive and I did not confront him.

“All I did was ask him what was happening, nothing else.

“So when he showed me the second yellow card and sent me off I could not believe it.

“I am sorry to my teammates because that meant we went down to 10 men and that made things even more difficult for us.”

And a young Liverpool Reserves team came out victorious in the 2008 Dallas Cup, defeating Tigres 3-0 in the final.

Goals from Krisztian Nemeth (2) and Martin Kelly gave the Reds victory. Liverpool chairman Tom Hicks presented Gary Ablett’s side with Under-19’s Super Group trophy.
