Steven Gerrard is a major doubt ahead of next Wednesday’s Champions League 3rd Round Qualifier away to Standard Liege after picking up a thigh strain during last night’s 4-1 victory over Valerenga.
As the Reds cruised to victory thanks to goals from Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun and David Ngog, Gerrard limped off after 25 minutes in Oslo.
The skipper has been ruled out of this Friday’s friendly at home to Italian side Lazio, and is likely to face late fitness tests ahead of next week’s clash in Belgium.
Manager Rafael Benitez confirmed, “It is a thigh strain. We need to wait but it could be one week.”
Liverpool’s Premier League campaign gets underway just days later when they travel to Sunderland on August 16th.
