Kuyt ready for New Year’s push

Dirk Kuyt has revealed his delight in Liverpool being top of the Premier League table through the festive fixture list and starting 2009 three points clear of second place Chelsea, but says improvement is still needed to maintain the position.

Rafa Benitez’s men are in pole position to claim the club’s first league title since 1990, but with 18 games left to play this season, there’s still a lot of hard-work to go. And Dutch international Kuyt knows it.

He told the club’s official web site, “It’s great to be top at the end of the year. But it’s just the beginning for us. We need to step up every week and in every game and try to perform as well as that in the next match.

“I enjoyed playing up front again. Unfortunately I couldn’t get my goal but I’d prefer to play in a team like this and win 5-1, than score every week somewhere else.

“I really enjoyed the game and it caps a good Christmas period in which we have picked up six very important points and scored eight goals along the way.”
