Reds face Blues in Cup

Liverpool will face Merseyside rivals Everton twice in the same week after drawing the Blues in the fourth round of the F.A. Cup.

After defeating Preston last night thanks to goals from Albert Riera and Fernando Torres, Rafa Benitez’s men were drawn to play David Moyes’ side at Anfield on the weekend of the 24th January.

The two local rivals are already scheduled to play each other in the Premier League on Monday 19th January, also at Anfield.

The last time Everton and Liverpool met in the FA Cup was in the 1990-91 season when the two sides needed three games to settle the tie, the second being the memorable 4-4 match at Goodison. The two city rivals also met in the final of the competition 20 years ago following the Hillsborough disaster and before in the 1986 final.

The significance to Hillsborough is something vice-captain Jamie Carragher is aware of, speaking ahead of the Preston game he said “It will be 20 years since Hillsborough. Because of that there will be extra significance attached to the competition for us. Going on to win it would be the perfect tribute to those who died.”
