Lucas confident in title talk

Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva says he is confident the Reds can put on a surge of victories and beat Manchester Utd to this season’s Premier League title.

Lucas stepped into Rafa Benitez’s starting line-up for Saturday’s dramatic 1-0 victory away at Fulham, with Javier Mascherano fatigued from international duty.

The Reds went top of the league for 24 hours before Utd’s 3-2 win at home to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon sent them ahead of Liverpool again.

Looking ahead to the final run in, Lucas said, “I think we really do believe we can win the league now.

“We deserved the win, especially the way we played in the first half with four efforts hitting the woodwork but now we must keep going.

“There are still seven more Premier League games so we must keep working hard but I think we have enough quality to win the title.

“We are in a fantastic position now, we have confidence, everybody is playing well so that’s the most important thing, especially at the end of the season, and everyone is fit.”
