Alonso and Masch injuries latest

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that he is not worried about injuries sustained to both Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano during this afternoon’s 3-0 victory over Newcastle at Anfield.

Alonso was strechered off after being the victim of a two-footed challenge by Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, who was sent off.

Mascherano pulled up minutes later and was replaced by David Ngog.

But Benitez told press after the game, “Mascherano twisted his ankle and Xabi picked up a knock.

“He (Alonso) has some bruising, but I think he will be okay in a few days.”

Meanwhile, Benitez assured fans that Fernando Torres’ omission from the squad today was precautionary wit the Spanish striker struggling with a hamstring problem.

He hopes to have all three of his players back for next Saturday’s visit to West Ham.

“Fernando had a problem with his hamstring and it would have been a risk to play him today,” added Benitez. “In the end we decided to leave him out of the squad, which I think was the right decision.”
