Rafa: Xabi’s future in his own hands

Midfielder Xabi Alonso made his first appearance in Liverpool’s pre-season match in Singapore on Sunday but manager Rafa Benitez admits he doesn’t know if it will be the Spaniard’s last appearance for the club.

It is the latest development in a transfer saga which has become even more frustrating than the Gareth Barry fiasco last summer.

Benitez said:

‘œYou never know, you have to ask him.

‘œEveryone has been asking me about the same question for two months. I think it’s a question for him, not us.

‘œWe signed him five years ago and we renewed his contract two years ago. We know that he’s a great player and that’s the reason we signed him and renewed his contract.”

‘œWe were not talking with Real Madrid and he knows our position. I was very clear the other day. He is our player and has three more years on his contract.

‘œAt the end of the day it all depends on him.’

Amazingly, with the player and Real Madrid keeping quiet on the situation in the last few days, the BBC Sport gossip column on Monday did not feature any Alonso related stories!
