Mascherano in fitness race for new season

Javier Mascherano says he has a bit more work to do than his teammates to be fully fit in time for the new Premier League season, which kicks off next Sunday.

Mascherano was granted more time off this summer following the birth of his second daughter, and with only a handful of pre-season appearances under his belt the Argentine international is working hard to make the season curtain raiser at Tottenham Hotspur on 16th August.

He told the club’s official web site, “Maybe I need a little bit more work because I arrived back when my teammates had already been back 10 days, but I will be in a good position by the start of the new season.

Mascherano was linked with a big money move to Barcelona all summer but now seems ready to battle for another season on Merseyside and says there’s improvement to be done before the Premier League gets underway.

He continued, “We didn’t do well against Espanyol so it was important to win. It’s pre-season but we knew we had to improve because in 10 days we start the Premier League.

“There are a lot of positive things to take from this game, like a clean sheet. We know we still have to improve but we are happy and now we have one more game to improve even more.

“After Saturday’s game against Atletico we’ll have seven days to get in top condition for the Premier League.”
