Barnes warns, “Don’t dismiss Liverpool”

Sports News - February 12, 2009Former Liverpool captain John Barnes has laughed off suggestions that Liverpool’s title dreams are over after a rocky start to their Premier League campaign.

Rafa Benitez’s men have won two and lost two of their opening four league games, with some critics suggesting this disappointing start will rule them out of the race for the title.

But Barnes, now working at Tranmere Rovers, says it’s early days and Liverpool’s players know how to get their season back on track.

He told the club’s official web site, “It’s ridiculous to write off Liverpool. Look at the start Manchester United had last season and they went on to win it.

“Both the Liverpool players and fans should have a belief that they can be competitive and can go all the way.

“They went very close last season, and although that doesn’t mean they’re going to do it this year, it will give them belief that they can win it – regardless of the start they’ve had.”
