Gerrard urges Red response

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard says the team must prove their worth and bounce back with a good result in this Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds slumped to a miserable 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina last night in the second game of the Champions League group stage, leaving them third in the group.

Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo how disappointing the night was and has urged a quick turnaround for Sunday’s top of the table match at Stamford Bridge.

He said, “It was a really disappointing night,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

“We are disappointed with our first-half performance. We just didn’t turn up and were second best all over the pitch. We deserved to go in behind.

“There was a reaction in the second half – without creating many clear-cut chances – but we lost the game in the first half.

“Now we’ve got a massive game at Chelsea on Sunday. We have to get this result out of our system quickly and show a reaction at Stamford Bridge.”

However Gerrard refused to concede that Liverpool would find it hard to qualify from their Champions League group stage, with four games remaining.

He added, “It’s wide open in this group and there is a lot of football still to be played.

“It’s important now that we win our next home game against Lyon. If we win all our home games and try to pick up a couple of points in the last two away games then we will be fine.”
