Dirk Kuyt says he can’t wait for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Fiorentina and the chance to win in Italy again with Liverpool.
Kuyt has fond memories of the Reds’ 1-0 victory over Inter Milan at the San Siro in 2008 in which Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the game as Rafa Benitez’s men ran out 3-0 winners on aggregate.
Now Liverpool return to Italy for the first time since that famous night in Milan and to the quaint city of Florence which takes the stage for their second game of this season’s Champions League group stages.
Kuyt says, “It was a great night in the San Siro. I enjoyed every minute of it and hopefully we can do the same against Fiorentina.
“All the teams in our group are good but Italian teams are normally very strong in defence and it can be difficult to go there. Having said that, it will be the same with the trips to Lyon and Debrecen.”
Fiorentina lost 1-0 to Lyon in their first game of the group stages, on the same night as Liverpool beat Debrecen 1-0 at Anfield to get their campaign off to a winning start – thanks to Kuyt’s goal.
He added, “It will be great if we can win in Florence and get six points from the first two games. It would give us more confidence ahead of the other group games.”
Fiorentina vs Liverpool gets underway at 7.45pm on Tuesday, 28th September and it’s live on Sky Sports.
