Liverpool 1-0 Debrecen: Dirk on target

Champions League Group E, Matchday 1
September 16th, 2009, Anfield

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start, despite an uncomfortable performance at Anfield.

Dirk Kuyt scored the only goal when he scrambled home a rebound after Fernando Torres saw his low shot from the edge of the area saved by the Debrecen goalkeeper.

The Hungarian champions looked strong at times and their organised defensive display frustrated the Reds as they struggled to get towards goal as often as they’d have liked.

Chances came and went for the Reds but there was no finishing touch, but they take the three points whilst Lyon beat Fiorentina 1-0 also in Group E.
