Back to the rumour mill, churning away round and round everyday. Well it looks as if Liverpool could be about to sign Austrian central midfielder Paul Scharner, currently a free agent after his contract with Wigan expired.

Scharner’s agent, Valentin Hobel, hinted yesterday that new Reds boss Roy Hodgson is after the 30 year old.

“Roy Hodgson and Paul Scharner – this is a special relationship,” he said.”Hodgson thinks that Paul’s strengths in midfield are better than his attributes in central defence.

“Liverpool would be a dream, of course, but we are in contact with several clubs. He is a free transfer and can choose where he goes.”

July 02, 2010 - Johannesburg, South Africa - 2 July 2010: Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan (3) scores his penalty during the quarter final game between Ghana and Uruguay at Soccer City in the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Meanwhile the Reds have also been linked with Ghanian international striker Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan memorably missed a penalty in the last minute of extra time for his country against Uruguay in the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup. Uruguay went on to win the match on penalties, before being knocked out by Holland in the semi-finals.

However, Gyan’s club, French outfit Rennes have slapped a £20million price tag on Gyan.
