With the transfer deadline edging closer, it’s been a busy day at Anfield.
Roy Hodgson has set a deadline of this Sunday for Barcelona to sign Javier Mascherano. The wantaway midfielder hasn’t travelled to Turkey for the Reds Europa League clash with Tranbzonspor and the two clubs are still to agree a fee for the Argentine.
One midfielder who has left the club is Alberto Aquilani, who has returned to Italy for a season loan with Juventus with a view to a permanent move that would cost the Serie A side £13m. Aquilani arrived at Anfield last summer for £18m from Roma but has struggled with form and fitness.
Meanwhile, forward Krisztian Nemeth has completed his move to Olympiacos. The Hungarian youngster will spend the season with the Greek side, in the same league where he played for AEK Athens last season.
With so many players leaving the club, it’s clear that certain areas of the squad need strengthening. Left back remains a priority, a new forward another and cover in midfield may be required now.
Reports suggest Hodgson is ‘closing in’ on a deal for Fulham left back Paul Konchesky. Sky Sports report the deal will cost the Reds £3.5m for the 29 year old Englishman.
Two more forwards are linked today, West Ham‘s Carlton Cole and Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez. Reports suggest Liverpool have approached Bayern about a loan move for the German forward.
