Liverpool Ladies have launched their 2012 FA Women’s Super League (WSL) season at Melwood.
Their LFC male counterparts were on hand to wish the ladies luck ahead of the new season, before joining the players for a combined photo.
Liverpool Ladies play their opening game at home against Bristol Academy on Easter Sunday [8 April] at Skelmersdale United and the team are hoping to improve on last season’s position and progress up the league table.
Robbie Johnson, Liverpool Ladies manager, said: “It’s key that we get some good results early on to build momentum for the season, and we’ll be looking to take all three points from Sunday’s game.
“Bristol Academy are a good side and will prove challenging opposition, but if we play to our capabilities we’ve got a great chance of securing all three points.
“We have assembled a squad with a good blend of experienced players who know this club and the WSL, along with the enthusiasm that has been brought by the new additions to the team, and the players can’t wait to get started on Sunday.”
The club is also hosting a free football festival ahead of the game. Budding female footballers are invited to take part, try out skills and train with Liverpool Ladies’ reserve team and Centre of Excellence staff. The event begins at 10.30am and all participants receive free entry to the game afterwards.
Captain Vicky Jones said: “We’re hoping that lots of girls come down to take part in the festival and give their football skills a try out. We held a few similar events last season and they proved very popular – it’s great to see so many young girls wanting to get involved in football.
“The support will really help us push on in our league campaign, and it was great to chat with the LFC team today and see how supportive they are of us and that they all hope that we have a really successful season.”
