Liverpool linked with Del Piero

Liverpool have been linked with Italian forward Alessandro Del Piero.

Del Piero is a free agent after being released by Juventus this summer, and was widely expected to sign for Australian side Sydney FC.

However, reports in Italy claim that Liverpool asked the 37 year-old to delay making a decision on a move down under to consider a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool have a huge shortage of attacking players following the deadline day debacle that saw them miss out on the signing of Clint Dempsey. Manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted the club will explore all opportunities – including those players out of contract and therefore available as free agents.

One player who is reportedly not on Liverpool’s radar is Michael Owen. Various British newspapers report today that Rodgers is not interested in re-signing the former Man United forward and Owen will instead sign for Stoke, as expected.

Sky Italia report that Liverpool are not only interested in Del Piero, but have now made him a contract offer.

Del Piero, capped 91 times for Italy, left Juve after 19 years at the club, saying that “Now a new adventure begins and I am as fired up as I was 19 summers ago.”

However, Australian press are reporting that Del Piero will in fact be announced as a Sydney FC player at 6pm AEST (9am on Wednesday morning in the UK).

Despite his age, Del Piero made 23 appearances for Juve last season.
