German side Hannover 96 have confirmed that Liverpool have been monitoring the availability of their goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, according to the player’s agent.
Recent reports have suggested Brendan Rodgers is on the look out for a replacement goalkeeper in case first choice keeper Pepe Reina opts to end his Anfield career.
Reina has been linked with a return to Barcelona this summer, although earlier this week he reiterated his yearning to stay on Merseyside.
Liverpool are linked with Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and today both Goal.com and ESPN report interest in 24-year-old Zieler.
Zieler’s agent, Dunther Neuhaus, told sports newspaper Bild, “They [Liverpool] have cast an eye on Ron.”
However, Hannover hit back at the speculation.
“We wouldn’t even think about it,” said club coach Mirko Slomka. “Zieler is a fantastic keeper. It’s normal that he is in the focus. I’ve been wondering why no other club tried to sign him.”
Zieler is highly regarded at Hannover, who finished 9th in the Bundesliga this season, and the club would make it hard for him to leave.
Liverpool could be on the look-out for a back-up to Reina, with Brad Jones the club’s current second choice shot-stopper.
