Report: Man United to bid for Christian Benteke

Man United are to bid for Aston Villa forward and Liverpool target, Christian Benteke.

The report comes via the Birmingham Mail, who write that United will submit their bid this week.

“If United meet the £32.5 million release clause, Villa will be powerless to stop the striker from moving,” they state.

It’s also reported that Old Trafford would be Benteke’s preferred destination.

With Benteke having made his intention to leave Villa clear, and Liverpool refusing to meet the release clause, the Belgian’s move to United would be pretty straight forward.

The 24-year-old has been reported to be Brendan Rodgers’ No. 1 target this summer and despite concerns among most fans over his suitability to Liverpool’s style, it would be another blow to see a target head to a rival.

Earlier this summer the Reds missed out on Memphis Depay after holding talks with the Dutchman – although Rodgers laughably claimed that they were never interested in him after he signed for United.

If Benteke joins United, Liverpool will need to look to a plan B – and with Carlos Bacca having already signed for AC Milan, those options are looking slim.

Last summer Liverpool missed out on prime target Alexis Sanchez, moving from Wilfried Bony to Loic Remy to eventually Mario Balotelli – showing a very hap-hazard approach to their forward search.
