Joe Gomez injury leaves Liverpool searching for a new centre-back

News that young defender Joe Gomez has picked up an Achilles injury ahead of his attempts to return from a cruciate knee problem, means Liverpool are now looking for a new centre-back this summer.

Gomez has been absent from the two pre-season games so far and has taken longer to recover than fellow ACL victim Danny Ings, who suffered a similar injury in the same week as the England youngster last October.

Gomez picked up his ACL injury while away with England under-21s, but now has a an Achilles problem, meaning he’ll miss most of pre-season. Reports suggest Liverpool are hopeful the 19-yer-old is only sidelined for weeks rather than months.

Regardless, news of Gomez’s injury arriving days after Mamadou Sakho was also sidelined with an Achilles issue that will see the Frenchman miss the start of the new season.

Having sold Martin Skrtel and released Kolo Toure, Klopp is left with only Dejan Lovren and new signing Joel Matip, plus Tiago Ilori – who will miss the start of the campaign after being called up for Portugal’s squad at the Olympics.

That leaves the Reds very short at the heart of defence, and Klopp will now seek to sign a new centre-back this summer.

Klopp is now in the market for a new left-back, centre-midfielder and centre-back this summer.

Thursday saw Skrtel and Jordon Ibe leave the club, meaning around £27.5 million has been recouped from player sales so far this summer.
