Joe Gomez linked with Huddersfield loan move

Jurgen Klopp‘s close friend David Wagner is keen on bringing Liverpool youngster Joe Gomez to Huddersfield Town on loan this season.

According to the ever-reliable Paul Joyce of the Express, Wagner is interested in acquiring the services of the 19-year-old, as he seeks promotion from the Championship.

Gomez is yet to play under Klopp at Anfield, having picked up a cruciate ligament injury representing England’s U21s the same week Klopp arrived at the club.

After a set-back this summer, the highly-rated defender has fought his way back to full fitness and is now back in full training.

Given his lack of match fitness though, and more experienced players being ahead of him in the pecking order, it seems hard to see Gomez getting much playing time at Liverpool any time soon.

Danny Ings suffered a similar injury to Gomez last October and was back in training in May, but he’s still struggling to find a way into the manager’s first-team plans. While Jon Flangan has been loaned to Burnley after a similarly long time on the sidelines with serious injury.

Because of this, a temporary move to Huddersfield would benefit all parties, as Gomez looks to return to the level that saw him shine in his early weeks as a Reds player.

Brendan Rodgers made the Englishman his first-choice left-back at the start of last season with Gomez preferred to Alberto Moreno in the role.

He impressed hugely there, particularly in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates, before his aforementioned injury cruelly ended his season prematurely.

Wagner and Klopp have already done business in the past, with goalkeeper Danny Ward currently on loan at John Smith’s Stadium, and it appears likely that Gomez will be heading there next.

Huddersfield have enjoyed an excellent start to the season in the Championship, despite losing their last two games, and they sit fourth in the table as things stand, like Liverpool.

Gomez would be a shrewd buy, with his all-round quality likely to stand out through at that level, as it did during his Charlton Athletic days.
