Southampton linked with Mamadou Sakho move

Southampton are said to be seriously considering a move for Liverpool’s out-of-favour centre-back Mamadou Sakho, after captain Jose Fonte handed in a transfer request at the south coast club this week.

Sakho is available for transfer this month after completely falling out with Jurgen Klopp over a series of incidents last year, with the player no longer even playing for the Reds’ under-23s.

The French international, who hasn’t played for Liverpool since April, has been linked with a host of clubs, including Inter Milan, AC Milan, Galatasaray, West Brom and his former club, PSG.

Now, he’s linked in French media with a move to Southampton after Fonte handed in a transfer request this week.

If such a move did materialise quickly, it could see Sakho playing at Anfield this month – with Liverpool and Southampton going head to head in the League Cup semi-final.

It would also see Sakho partnering Virgil van Dijk – a partnership that some may see as being extremely capable in the Premier League.

The player is said to be keen to remain in England.

West Ham are also said to be interested in the 26-year-old, who hasn’t trained with the first-team squad at Melwood since a series of Snapchat messages in September criticising his treatment.
