Lucas Leiva reflected on “an incredible 10 years” after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough, which could be his final competitive game of the club.
Lucas replaced compatriot Roberto Firmino with 11 minutes to play at Anfield on Sunday, as the Reds cruised to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
This victory has earned Liverpool a Champions League playoff in August, but it remains to be seen whether Lucas will be there to feature on the club’s return to Europe’s elite.
Presented with a commemorative trophy by Kenny Dalglish to mark his decade with the club, Lucas delivered an emotional speech in front of a sold-out Anfield crowd.
And the 30-year-old hinted that his time with the Reds may be coming to an end.
“It’s been an incredible 10 years, we all know it’s been a little bit like a rollercoaster: a lot of ups and downs,” he said.
“But I’m so proud to wear this shirt every day of my life.
“This club made me better as a person, as a player, I have two kids born in Liverpool.
“I don’t have one specific moment I’d say was a highlight, I think these 10 years have been a very good 10 years.
“So many good moments, and of course the support I’ve been getting is incredible.”
Lucas, who also took to Instagram after the game to thank supporters, considers himself an adopted Scouser—and the midfielder went on to describe his affinity with the city.
“Like I said, my two kids are born in Liverpool, so I really feel that here is my home,” he continued.
“For sure, my kids will be really proud when they grow up, come to Anfield and watch games, and know that their dad played for Liverpool.
“I’m speechless, to be honest, and I just want to thank everyone.”
Lucas is attracting interest from Premier League newcomers Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of the summer transfer window, with manager Chris Hughton eager to draw upon experience in the top flight.
He is also regularly linked with clubs from both the Super lig and Serie A, and has previously intimated he would remain in Europe if he left Liverpool.
The Brazilian will have at least one more opportunity to turn out for the Reds, however.
He is part of Jurgen Klopp‘s 25-man squad for the post-season friendly with Sydney FC on Wednesday.
