Rumour Mill: Liverpool interested in midfielder Granit Xhaka

Reports in Germany are linking Liverpool with a move for talented Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.

German publication SportBild claim the Reds are interested in bringing the highly-rated Bundesliga man to Merseyside in the summer, as Jurgen Klopp looks to improve his squad.

Xhaka is a dynamic midfielder with quality all-round attributes – tenacious, strong in the air, superb passing – and his playmaking ability would give Liverpool something in they currently lack.

Physically adept, tactically intelligent and technically gifted, the 23-year-old would provide Liverpool with a more dynamic option at the base of midfield.

Lucas Leiva can still produce the goods on occasion, but the thought of a Xhaka, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can midfield-three is mouthwatering. It would possess quality, dynamism and youth in abundance.

We shouldn’t get too excited about a potential transfer, however, as the report claims Monchengladbach would demand €50million for Xhaka’s services.

That could prove to be a definite stumbling block in the move, as well as the fact that other clubs are also interested, including Arsenal.

Xhaka is part of a hugely talented generation of Swiss footballers, which includes Xherdan Shaqiri, Josip Drmic and Ricardo Rodriguez.

He has won 39 caps for Switzerland since making his debut in 2011, scoring six goals.

It’s not the first time Xhaka has been linked with a move to Anfield. He was linked by Bild in November, with a fee of £20 million touted.
