Philippe Coutinho fails to prevent Brazil’s Copa America Centenario exit

Philippe Coutinho once again started for Brazil in Copa America Centenario on Monday, but this time it ended in misery for the 24-year-old.

Coutinho was the star of the show in the Selecao‘s 7-1 win over Haiti last week, scoring his first ever hat-trick for his country.

Brazil faced Peru in Massachusetts in the early hours of Monday morning, with Dunga’s side knowing just a point would see them reach the quarter-finals.

Coutinho was again named in the starting line-up, occupying the left-sided attacking role that he starred in for Liverpool last season.

It was to be a miserable evening for the Reds talisman, and anyone associated with Brazil, as they crashed out of the tournament in controversial fashion.

The game was still deadlocked at 0-0 with 15 minutes remaining, but a contentious incident robbed Brazil of a place in the last-eight.

Raul Ruidiaz appeared to handle the ball as he converted Andy Polo’s cross, but the goal was awarded, amid scenes of anger from Selecao players.

Referee Andres Cunha consulted with his linesman for nearly five minutes, but after much deliberation, he stayed with his original decision.

Despite a late rally, which included a great chance squandered by Corinthians midfielder Elias, Peru held on for an all important victory.

It is the first time Brazil have failed to get past the group stages of Copa America since 1987, in yet another low point for the national team.

The humiliating 7-1 defeat to Germany on their own turf two years ago, in the World Cup semi-finals, still hurts, and this early exit will do nothing to help lift spirits.

On a personal note, Coutinho should certainly take positives from the tournament, although he saved his most ineffective performance for last.
