Last minute decision on Xabi

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that it will be a last minute decision as to whether or not Xabi Alonso plays in Saturday’s FA Cup Final against West Ham.

Alonso was stretchered off during the Reds’ 3-1 victory at Porstmouth in the Premiership on Sunday. He’s now facing a race against time to shake the injury off and be fit enough to play the final.

Benitez says he’ll take no risks with his £10m Spanish midfielder. He said, “We need to see tomorrow. He was working with the physios and maybe tomorrow he can do some exercises and we can see what shape he is in.

“At this moment I do not know if he will be fit, but I will have a much clearer idea tomorrow. It depends what the doctors say whether we leave a decision on Xabi until the last minute.

“But I also have confidence in Momo, Stevie and Didi, and if it would be a risk with Xabi then maybe we would go with the other players.”
