Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has publicly praised his latest signing, Brazilian defender Fabio Aurelio, even comparing his passing ability to that of Spanish midfield ace Xabi Alonso.

As he watched Aurelio train for the first time with the squad, Benitez was very excited about the potential the 27 year old defender.

“Aurelio is a left full back or a left winger with a lot of quality,” said Benitez. “He can cross the ball superbly and he is maybe a better passer of the ball than Xabi Alonso.

“People will say ‘oh really?’ But you will see the quality of his crosses and passes with his left foot. He is also fantastic at set pieces.”

Aurelio started his career with Sao Paulo in Brazil before earning a transfer to Benitez’s old club, Valencia, in 2000.

To mark the end of the 30-year wait for a league title, the ‘Liverpool Mishmash’ poster is now available to pre-order exclusively on This Is Anfield.
