Agger looks to ‘˜new start’

Liverpool central defender Daniel Agger is eager to start playing more football for the first team after playing the full 90 minutes of the Reds’ Community Shield triumph over Chelsea on Sunday in Cardiff.

The Dane has suffered multiple injury problems since signing for the club during the January transfer window earlier this year.

But now Agger will be looking to oust Sami Hyypia from his regular first team place alongside Jamie Carragher in central defence.

He says, “It was a bit of a surprise to be selected, but that’s what I’m here for. Although it was a surprise I was ready.

“I wasn’t thinking about the fact I was playing against Shevchenko, all I thought about was the game. To be playing made me happy so I was determined to do my best.

“I think I’ve been unlucky since I moved to Liverpool because of injuries, but you just have to get on with it. Now I’m moving on and will keep working.

“I’ve always felt a lot of confidence in my ability. I believe in myself and I know what I can and can’t do.

“Now I hope this is a new start and the bad luck I’ve had is in the past.”
