Liverpool have been dealt a triple injury blow ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup tie at Kenilworth Road against Luton Town.

Skipper Steven Gerrard, midfielder Xabi Alonso and full-back Fabio Aurelio all picked up knocks in Wednesday night’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Wigan at Anfield.

Rafael Benitez confirmed the bad news today, “Steven and Alvaro have a calf problem and Fabio has a hamstring injury,” he said.

“They are all out of this weekend’s game and will work with the physios to be ready for Middlesbrough next Saturday.”

Meanwhile Benitez has pledged to do his best to keep Javier Mascherano at Anfield. The Argentine midfielder has attracted the interest of Europe’s top clubs who can meet his agency owner’s £17million asking price.

Benitez says, “We know Juventus and other top sides are interested in him but we have the option. Javier is happy here and wants to stay. We will do our best to keep him here.”
