Gerrard out of City clash

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will not be risked in the squad for this Sunday’s Premier League clash at home to Manchester City, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

It was hoped earlier this week that he may return to action sooner than expected after recovering from the injury, picked up during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Everton in the FA Cup earlier this month.

However it has now been confirmed that he will not be in the squad for this weekend’s game, and may also miss Wednesday night’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid in Spain.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez confirmed, “We don’t know if he’ll be back for the game in midweek. But he will not be involved against City.

“He is improving but we cannot take any risks so he won’t be in the squad.”

Liverpool are also without midfielder Xabi Alonso who is suspended after collecting five yellow cards, so a midfield partnership of Lucas Leiva and Javier Mascherano is expected.
