Fans react to Johnson signing

As reported last night, Liverpool have agreed a deal to bring England international right-back Glen Johnson to Anfield from Portsmouth.

The 24-year-old will become Rafa Benitez’s first signing of the summer in a deal estimated to be worth £17.5million, after fighting off competition from Manchester City and Chelsea.

It is understood he will officially be unveiled as a Liverpool player over the next 48 hours after returning early from holiday to complete a medical on Merseyside.

So, £17.5million on a right-back. What do the fans make of it? Here’s a selection of the fans’ reactions in our forums since the move was confirmed:

  • gold132: Great signing, defence almost sorted Now we can concentrate on the attack.

  • Matt: Rafa’s first day back after his holidays and we sign his first choice for right back. Not a bad days work.

  • geebo: Capello has proved himself world wide as a brilliant trainer. He is so good that you could even say, if he failed with England then there must be something endemically wrong with English football. So, when this man chooses a younger right back to player in HIS team you know he must be good.

  • Kopite77: A good day for everyone associated with this great club, hopefully there are a lot more on the horizon. I have a feeling Glen is going to do very well for us.

  • Mooki3: Great signing, one of the World’s best full-backs, and a young(ish) Englishman to boot!

  • GreatDane: Decent going forward, limited defensively, and definitely not worth £17.5 million. Hope to be proved wrong though.

  • DanDagger: Johnson is an upgrade on Arby. Arby is solid but Johnson can do that bit extra. We will be expecting to win most of our games next season and we need attacking quality from all positions and Johnson is greater than Arbeloa in that aspect. Johnson is also OK defensively, in my opinion better than Alves and Boswinga defensively.

  • JAM79RED: Excellent signing rafa. A good solid professional and he is only 24. Welcome to Liverpool Glen.
