Benitez gives Voronin hope of future

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez says he is not ruling out Ukranian striker Andriy Voronin breaking back into the first team.

Voronin spent the whole of last season on loan to Hertha Berlin after the signing of Robbie Keane from Tottenham.

And after a successful season with the German side, Voronin is back at Anfield aiming to push his way back into Benitez’s good books.

“He did really well in Germany last season, scoring plenty of goals, and he has told me that he wants to stay at the club and fight for his position.

“I have told him that will be difficult with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard as our first-choice strikers. But he realises this and the players we have in the squad.

“But he also knows that this club always plays more than 60 games a season and that means there are opportunities. He will fight for his place.”

Voronin played the first half of the Reds’ goalless draw against St. Gallen in Switzerland last night.
