Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrad believes the team are nearly back to their blistering form they showed in the final games of last season, pushing Manchester Utd all the way to the league title.
The Reds had an uncertain start to their season with two defeats in their opening three league games, but after three victories on the bounce Gerrard says confidence is back at Anfield.
After last night’s 1-0 victory over Debrecen in the Champions League, Gerrard said, “The confidence is starting to come back into the squad now, losing those two early games close together was not good but we are building slowly back to the form we want.
“It takes a while to get back to your best, but we are happy with the reaction from everybody so now we aim to go and get a good win at West Ham on Saturday.
“It is still very early, but it was important that we recovered from that poor start. This is only the beginning for us.
“We have seen Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea start well, and some of the big teams without important players, so it is going to be an interesting fight this season.
“There is a long way to go with a lot of football to be played, we just have to keep improving the way we are.”
Brazilian defender Fabio Aurelio returned for the Reds last night as a late substitute. The left-back had missed the start of the season with a knee injury.
Gerrard added that the return of Aurelio and new £18million midfielder Alberto Aquialni’s recovery from injury will boost the Reds considerably.
He continued, “It is good to have Fabio Aurelio back and ready to come in, and Alberto Aquilani looks a very exciting player and it will be nice to have him as an option, but he is still a way off playing yet.”
