Aquilani set for Reds debut this month

Summer signing Alberto Aquilani is recovering ahead of schedule and could make his Liverpool debut this month, according to Spanish football correspondent Guillem Balague.

Aquilani, signed from Roma for £17m as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, had an ankle operation six weeks ago but is recovering well and now running normally.

Balague, writing in his column in The Daily Mirror, says “Liverpool are hoping that he can join the group this month and be a regular starter by November, possibly playing within two to three weeks.”

However, he writes that Liverpool won’t rush the Italian back and prefer to “sort out his ankle problems once and for all.”

Balague adds “His career has been interrupted by too many injuries and a team-mate of his at Roma tells me that if he can play more regularly and injury free then he is easily worth £10million more than the £20million paid for him.”

It is unlikely he will be fit for the visit of Man United at the end of the month, but could make his bow in the Carling Cup match at Arsenal on the 28th.

Aquilani is expected to replace Lucas in the midfield once he is fully fit and occupy between Mascherano and Gerrard.
