Gillett looks to long-term Rafa stay

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has publicly backed under-fire Reds manager Rafa Benitez, amid suggestions from the media that Benitez is poised to lose his job.

The Reds have lost their last four games, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Lyon on Tuesday night in the Champions League.

But Gillett reminded fans that Benitez signed a new four year deal with the club back in spring and Gillett is determined to honour that to the Spaniard.

He said, “Absolutely. We have just entered into a long-term agreement with Rafa. Our family is extraordinarily pleased with him, we think he is absolutely as good as there is in the business and I am sure the Hicks [family] feel the same way. We just extended his contract.”

Gillett has come under immense criticism for the lack of funds for new players available to Benitez (cough, and quite rightly so).

When asked whether there will be any additional funds made available to Benitez in the January transfer window to save Liverpool’s season, Gillett merely replied, “I don’t think that is something I am prepared to comment on at the moment.”
