Mascherano out despite suspension

Javier Mascherano has suffered a medial ligament sprain and will spend sometime on the sidelines, even though he is suspended for four games.

The Argentine international suffered the blow as he made a late challenge on Portsmouth’s Tal Ben Haim in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Fratton Park.

His red card for violent conduct automatically earns him a four match suspension, which would see him miss all of Liverpool’s festive period matches.

Mascherano is suspended for Saturday’s game against Wolves at Anfield, the trip to Aston Villa on 29th December, the FA Cup tie at Reading on January 2nd and the home clash with Tottenham on January 10th. But the Reds midfielder will spend that time recovering from the injury.

“The player had a scan which confirmed the medical team’s initial diagnosis that he suffered a medial ligament sprain in his left knee,” the club’s official website confirmed.

“He is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.”

Rumours are abound that Mascherano is set for a big money move to La Liga giants Barcelona in the January transfer window. Has Masch played his last game for the club? Discuss: Forums, @thisisanfield or Comments below.
