Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has told press that Javier Mascherano has indeed asked to be sold.
Mascherano returned to training with the Reds for the first time since the World Cup yesterday and is thought to have told Hodgson of his request in a meeting yesterday afternoon.
However, Hodgson pointed out that the Argentine international has two years left on his contract.
It is likely, however, that Liverpool would be looking to cash in on the 26-year-old with Inter Milan thought to be poised with a £25million bid.
“Yes he wants to leave the club, he has made that perfectly clear,” Hodgson said. “He wanted to leave the club a year ago. It disappoints me but it is not unusual.
“He is a Liverpool player, he has a two-year contract and I expect him to honour that contract until the day that Liverpool decide to sell him.”
