It’s all go at the moment, the rumour mill is well and truly on fire. Today there’s going to be a press conference at Anfield… some say Martin Broughton and Barclays will be there… some say it is only to show off Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic and Danny Wilson. Whatever the case, some interesting questions will be asked today.
In the mean time, it looks as if Javier Mascherano is all set to complete a £25million switch to Inter Milan, if you believe today’s papers. The Argentine international resumed training with Liverpool at Melwood yesterday, meeting with new boss Roy Hodgson for the first time.
It is understood Mascherano has told the club that he wishes to leave, and follow in the footsteps of Rafa Benitez to the San Siro.
It is no secret that the 26-year-old wanted to leave Merseyside last summer, but after giving the club one more year of service, looks set to walk.
Meanwhile the pleas for Fernando Torres to stay at Anfield are coming in in abundance, admid lots of speculation linking the Spanish striker to big money moves to Manchester City and Chelsea.
John Aldridge believes Torres owes the club at least one more season, before moving on with his career.
He said, “Personally, I think Torres owes Liverpool 12 months. He came from Athletico Madrid, we have put him on a higher pedestal. Over the past couple of years with all those goals he has scored, he has been terrific; but I just think he owes us another 12 months to help get the club back on track.
“He is massive for the club. He is creative, his goalscoring ratio is phenomenal. He still has four years left on his contract so at the end of the day Roy Hodgson could demand he stays for another 12 months; but of course, players are very, very powerful these days.”
Jamie Carragher says he is confident that Torres (and Steven Gerrard) will stay at the club for the coming season. He told Zoo, “There’s been a lot of negativity and it’s been like that for a while,” said Carragher.
“I’m sure that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will still be involved at the club next season.
However, Zoo is a magazine and it is likely these quotes were said some time ago.
And there’s a new name floating around the incoming rumour mill. Hodgson has supposedly got his eye on 30-year-old Mexican left-back Carlos Salcido.
The club have lost three left-backs in the last 6 months after the departures of Emiliano Insua, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena and Hodgson has revealed that sorting that place in the team out is a priority.
Salcido can also double up as a left-sided midfielder and has won 77 caps for his country, currently playing for PSV Eindhoven.
There’s more transfer rumours, gossip and discussion over in the Rumour Mill.
