Liverpool have had a £2m bid for Middlesbrough keeper Brad Jones turned down.

Australian Jones, 28, qualifies as a homegrown player having come through Boro’s academy as a teenager.

Jones missed this summer’s World Cup finals as he had to leave the Socceroos squad after his son was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Current understudy to Pepe Reina, Diego Cavalieri, has been reported to be unsettled on Merseyside and was linked with a return to South America earlier in the year. Having a back-up keeper, who is included in every matchday squad, as one of the homegrown quota makes a lot of sense.
