Tuesday’s Rumours: A left-back, midfielder and striker

The Rumour Mill is slowly beginning to turn again with the January transfer window little over a month away.

Questions remain about how involved Liverpool will be in their first transfer window under new owners New England Sports Ventures. Will John Henry provide funds to inject some life into our season? Will the money be spent cautiously on youth? Who will spend the money for that matter? Roy Hodgson? Damien Comolli?

Whatever the case, it doesn’t stop the newspapers from having their two cents and shift a few more copies off the stands. Here’s a brief round-up of the transfer rumours involving the Reds today…

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Reto Ziegler has been linked with a move to Anfield.

The 24-year-old Swiss left-back is currently playing for Sampdoria in Serie A after loan spells at Wigan and Hamburg during a dissapointing career at White Hart Lane.

With Liverpool struggling with injury problems at left-back – Paul Konchesky and Fabio Aurelio both dipping in and out of action with various problems – Ziegler could be seen as a permanent solution.

The Daily Mail reports today that the Reds have also been linked with a move for ammunition up front, with Jonjo Shelvey on the verge of first team action and only David Ngog and Fernando Torres as the club’s established strikers.

The newspaper suggest Hodgson could be weighing up a €30million bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

However, it does appear that rumour was actually started by former Reds midfielder – and now media ally of his Dad – Jamie Redknapp, so that can probably be laid to rest now.

The Metro believe midfielder Simon Davies could be on his way to Merseyside, following Hodgson and Konchesky.

The 29-year-old Welsh international and former Everton left-winger played under Hodgson at Fulham between 2007-2010.

Comolli has been spending the last couple of weeks on the continent, watching a few players he believes would be worthy additions to Hodgson’s team.

Other names being touted around are Eden Hazard, Gervinho and Yann M’Villa. Hodgson was in attendance to watch Lille play over the weekend.
