Liverpool have approached Aston Villa over the possibility of signing winger Stewart Downing, according to Sky Sports.

This afternoon it was revealed that Villa have made an £18million bid for Sunderland striker Darren Bent and Villa boss Gerard Houllier will now be looking to raise funds for the transfer.

That could mean offloading Downing to Liverpool, who have been linked with the 26-year-old in the past.

Downing joined Villa in the summer of 2009 for £12million, but had an injury hit start to his career at Villa Park.

He could provide some exciting fresh blood and pace for Liverpool’s midfield, with two weeks of the transfer window left to complete the transfer.
