Former LFC striker becomes coach in China!

Former Liverpool striker Nicolas Anelka has been promoted to first team coach at Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, following the dismissal of three French coaches at the club.

Shanghai are managed by former Fulham boss John Tigana, who signed Anelka, now 33, in January on a free transfer from Chelsea.

A club statement reads:

“We fired the assistant coaches. Tigana is still the coach of the team. Anelka is now on the coaching team.”

Anelka is now part of a new-look coaching team at the club, which includes former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Ian Walker.

Anelka joined Liverpool in December 2001, in a six-month loan deal from Paris St-Germain, but despite scoring 5 goals for the club, was not offered a permanent deal by then Reds boss Gerard Houllier, who opted to sign El Hadji Diouf instead.

Anelka went on to play for Manchester City, Fenerbace, Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea, before joining Shanghai.
