Comments by chairman Tom Werner after the Wigan match that Luis Suarez will not be sold, and that “our intention is to strengthen” the squad in January, will only add fuel to the fire when it comes to media linking signings – especially forwards – with Anfield.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is considering a gamble on Villarreal’s former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi, 25, as he bids to solve his striker shortage, even though the forward is out with knee ligament damage at the moment. (The Metro)

Rodgers is ready to make a surprise swoop on his old club Reading to take defender Alex Pearce (24) to Liverpool. Rodgers coached Pearce at the Royals academy. (The Mirror)
