Liverpool have crashed out of the Europa League despite a heroic 3-1 victory over Zenit St Petersburg at Anfield on Thursday night.
The Reds go out of the competition on the away goals rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.
Brendan Rodgers’ men started the night with a two goal deficit after losing 2-0 in Russia a week ago. After falling behind to a Hulk goal early on, it looked like a depressing night was on the cards at Anfield.
But Liverpool battled back and two goals from free-kicks from the incredible Luis Suarez and a bundled goal from midfielder Joe Allen got the Reds back to within a goal of victory.
However, despite late efforts from Suarez again and Jonjo Shelvey, Liverpool’s crucial fourth goal never came and the Russians make the last 16 of the competition.
