Liverpool “meets my criteria” claims Ajax defender

Centre back is clearly a position of high importance for Brendan Rodgers to strengthen this summer; Jamie Carragher is retiring, Sebastian Coates is expected to leave and Martin Skrtel is out-of-favour and another who could depart – leaving only Daniel Agger.

While youngsters Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom have experience at centre back in their youth careers, Rodgers must sign at least one top quality centre back to his squad.

Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Feyenoord’s Stefan De Vrij have been linked recently.

But a new target has emerged in the past week, with Ajax’s right-sided centre back Toby Alderweireld entering the equation.

Alderweireld, 24, is a vital member of the Ajax team (36 appearances this season in League and Europe) and is also a key part of the impressive young Belgian national side.

He has been linked with Newcastle and Everton of late, and is quoted in The Express saying:

“I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria.”

Alderweireld is 6ft 1 and would cost in the region of £8m according to reports.
