Liverpool close in on Portuguese defender

Liverpool are looking more and more likely to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori in a £3.5million deal, according to the Daily Mail and The Mirror.

Ilori could be the perfect fit for Brendan Rodgers this summer at just 20-years-old and a highly rated centre-back, with Jamie Carragher leaving Anfield this summer.

Veteran Carragher will play his final game for the club when he hangs up his boots on his footballing career in the Reds’ final game of the season, at home to QPR on Sunday.

The Daily Mail report this morning:

Valencia have also made enquiries but Liverpool hope their strong relationship with the Portuguese will help close the deal quickly.

Ilori was born in London and is yet to play for Portugal, so could also play for the English national side.

Ilori is yet to reguarly break through to Sporting Lisbon’s first team, playing this season in their ‘B’ team.

Ilori played against Liverpool’s youth team in the NextGen series in 2011 when Lisbon defeated the Reds 3-0. Watch the highlights and interview with Ilori above.
