The Reds take on Greek side Olympiakos, who Gerrard famously lead Liverpool to victory against en route to the 2005 Champions League triumph, in a pre-season game at Anfield.

The occasion will be used to celebrate Gerrard’s career at Liverpool and his 10 years as Reds captain.

Robbie Fowler had two spells at the club between 1993-2001 and 2006-207, and was idolised by Gerrard when he was coming through Liverpool’s youth ranks.

The Reds will welcome back Carragher for the first time since he hung up his boots from football in Liverpool’s final game of last season with QPR at Anfield.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was delighted to welcome the two Kop heroes back to the squad for a pre-match training session at Melwood ahead of Saturday’s game.

He told the club’s official website, “I spoke with Carra and obviously he had spoken with Stevie at the end of the season.

“They are very close friends and they’ve gone through many battles on the field together, and obviously with Stevie out injured towards the end of the season they never got the chance to play together, so it will be a nice moment for them.

“Carra will feature at some stage, as will Robbie Fowler. I love Robbie, he’s a great guy and he’s good to have around.
“We’re obviously looking to get him involved in the football club in terms of the coaching side which I think he’s got a lot to offer so he’ll get a run-out.

“He never left the football club maybe the way he wanted to so it’s a nice opportunity for him to play in front of the crowd again and give the Kop a real round of applause.”

As for whether the pair will make an impact on the game, well Rodgers was in good spirits about their physical conditions too.

He added, “So, two great legends of the football club I’ll welcome with open arms. They trained this morning and Carra looks like he’s never been away. Robbie looks like he has been away!”

Liverpool vs Olympiakos – the Steven Gerrard testimonial – gets underway at 12.45pm on Saturday, 3rd August 2013. It’s live on BT Sport in the UK and we’ll be bringing you coverage throughout the day.
