Gerrard will play his 709th and final home game for the Reds this Saturday against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

McManaman told BT Sport, “He won’t regret leaving and Liverpool will be fine without him. However, I think he should have stayed and retired at Liverpool.

“There’s a player who would have signed if he had been offered a contract at the right time.

“I look at the midfielders there and I think ‘Are the other midfielders better than him?’ and the answer’s a resounding no.”

Steve McManaman, John Gregory and Michael Gray were speaking on Football Tonight, BT Sport’s football debate and news round-up show.
