Jurgen Klopp named an interesting lineup for Tuesday morning’s friendly clash with AS Roma, including a first start of pre-season for Emre Can.
Can returned to training at the end of last week, but sat out of Sunday morning’s 2-0 win over AC Milan as he continued to build his fitness.
But as the Reds round off their tour of the US, the German is included in an exciting attacking side.
Veteran goalkeeper Alex Manninger has been given his debut for the Reds, after signing on a free transfer this summer, and the Austrian will operate behind a solid back four.
Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner will operate at right- and left-back respectively, with Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan continuing in defence.
Joining Can in midfield is Georginio Wijnaldum, in what is likely to be a 4-2-3-1 formation.
This attacking system sees Daniel Sturridge start up front, supported by Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Sheyi Ojo.
Klopp’s defensive reserves include Shamal George, Simon Mignolet, Andre Wisdom, Connor Randall, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alberto Moreno, while in midfield he could call upon Jordan Henderson, Cameron Brannagan and Kevin Stewart as replacements for Can and Wijnaldum.
Philippe Coutinho, Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana, Christian Benteke and Danny Ings make up the rest of the substitutes’ bench.
Marko Grujic and Ovie Ejaria miss out through injury, while Sunday’s goalscorer, Divock Origi is also missing.
Liverpool XI vs. AS Roma: Manninger; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner; Can, Wijnaldum; Mane, Firmino, Ojo; Sturridge
Substitutes: Mignolet, George, Wisdom, Randall, Alexander-Arnold, Moreno, Stewart, Brannagan, Henderson, Lallana, Coutinho, Markovic, Benteke, Ings
