Bundesliga left-back “has everything” – the ideal signing for Liverpool

Bundesliga reporter Keith Costigan has backed Schalke left-back Sead Kolasinac as the ideal signing for Liverpool this summer.

Kolasinac is currently in the final months of his contract with Markus Weinzierl’s side, with the 23-year-old’s future at the Veltins-Arena in doubt.

Having spent his entire senior career with Schalke so far, Kolasinac could be looking for a change of scenery in the summer.

And Costigan, who covers the Bundesliga for FOX Soccer in the United States, believes he would be the ideal signing for Liverpool ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

“One player this year has stood out for me in Bundesliga is Sead Kolasinac,” he told This is Anfield.

“He is a left-back who is very good at going forward.

“He is available on a free this summer, he is 23 and he has everything you would want in a modern full-back.”

Costigan has seen most his games this season, but two in particular saw him impress – against Dortmund and Bayern Munich, showing he performs when it matters.

“He played against Christian Pulisic and he marked him out of the game and was so physical. He didn’t give him a minute’s peace.

“And against Bayern Munich, Arjen Robben came off and was really frustrated by how good defensively he was.”

There is likely to be a major tug-of-war for Kolasinac’s services if he does leave Schalke at the end of his contract, however, with a host of top European sides linked with the left-back.

But given the Reds’ lack of quality in the position, Costigan believes the Bosnian could be a priority for Jurgen Klopp. He even suggested Liverpool may have already been in contact with the player, in the hope of sealing another bargain signing after signing Joel Matip on a free from Schalke last summer.

“We got Joel Matip last summer on a free from Schalke and I am sure Klopp has enquired about it. I do know Chelsea and Juventus are being heavily linked,” Costigan continued.

“There are bigger names like Julian Brandt expected to be at Anfield next year—he’s another young player.

“But for me Kolasinac is ready now and he would come into the Premier League and be one of the best left-backs in the country, that’s how highly I rate him.”
